SUN-A09: Addressing Health, Equity, and Healing: Design Processes that Engender Systems of Change

Challenges with housing supply, human connection, and mental health are common. Many projects work to address this on discreet sites . How can a trauma-informed design approach apply to vision plans and city infrastructure? Learn how designers and housing authorities are changing the design process to address people, healing, and equity.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how trauma impacts the human brain, and how to integrate mental health into the design of buildings and sites to improve occupant well-being.
  • Understand and summarize the basic tenets of trauma-informed design and how they can be applied at multiple scales, from site design to urban infrastructure.
  • Understand and learn about the differences between the conventional design process and unique strategies tailored to people and under-resourced communities.
  • Understand how a large nonprofit organization collaborates and addresses community challenges in a systems-oriented approach.
