In this tour, discover unique contributions of public-sector designers through visiting significant public spaces, highlighting transformational planning and design projects, and exploring the complexities involved in guiding a concept to construction.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand the role of public-sector landscape architects and designers in the planning, design, implementation, stewardship, and ongoing maintenance of nationally significant public spaces.
Identify the missions and priorities that agencies bring to design and management of the public realm, and how building partnerships and resolving differences support collaboration to achieve a cohesive monumental core.
Explore the role of landscape architects in shaping long-range plans and designs that address and balance economic development, resilience, commemoration, placemaking, special events, security, and preservation.
Learn how different project scales—from detailing streetscape design guidelines, to revitalizing downtown parks, to re-envisioning grand civic spaces—contribute to the character of the nation’s capital.
