The Wharf, Washington, D.C./ Andrew Ruggen, Wolf Josey

Completed in 2022 over two phases with over 12+ years of design, the mixed use 27 acre development of the District Wharf has transformed Southwest Washington, D.C. from open parking lots and an inaccessible waterfront to a new pedestrian destination within the city. The public space design involved multiple landscape architecture firms contributing to a diverse urban fabric along the Washington Channel. In addition to hearing from the master plan architect and developer, this session features 4 key landscape architecture firms involved in the public space design providing a range of perspectives on the design, community process and implementation of the District Wharf.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand different approaches to the design of public landscapes from multiple practitioners that came together to create a new waterfront destination
• Discuss approaches to preservation and urban design in dense new development.
• Explore innovative approaches to urban tree planting/preservation, stormwater reuse, and community engagement.
• Learn about built landscapes that are successfully contributing to a new urban and pedestrian waterfront experience.
