The McMillan Plan of 1902 for Washington built upon the L’Enfant Plan of 1791, but the implementation of the vision across the Potomac River posed significant planning/design challenges. This Field Session explores how planners have worked to implement that historic vision while addressing significant design challenges associated with Arlington House and the Arlington National Cemetery and surrounding landscape, the Women’s Military Memorial, Memorial Avenue, and the Memorial Bridge.

Includes: transportation. Moderate walking.

Learning Outcomes:

Be able to identify the importance of grounding a long-distance viewshed as a component of an urban design vision with a landmark/monument and supporting landscape features that reinforce the viewshed.
Be able to identify important tools that the federal government employs to protect natural and cultural resources to enhance resources and larger-scale urban design visions.
Be able to identify key landscape design elements/materials that reinforce urban design concepts and visions, as well as important tools that preservation planners/architects use to preserve and protect historic and cultural resources.
Be able to identify the importance of interdisciplinary professional dialogue in the design/implementation of urban design concepts, as well as the ways that the federal government supports the history of all in our society.
