Dean Norton joined Mount Vernon Estate in June 1969, after receiving a degree in horticulture from Clemson University, and was promoted to horticulturist in 1980. Using the latest plant science and management techniques, Dean’s devotion to researching 18th century gardens and practices leads the restoration of historic gardens and landscapes at Mount Vernon. He has received preservation awards from DAR, American Horticulture Society, and Garden Club of America’s prestigious Elizabeth Craig Weaver Proctor National Medal. Recently awarded an honorary doctorate from Washington College, he lectures internationally, and by Presidential Appointment serves on the Committee for Preservation of the White House.
