Jim Babinchak is a Principal and Managing Director of the Charlotte office of Cooper Carry. As an Architect, Jim has over 30 years of experience designing narrative-driven projects; focusing on immersive branded experiences found within everyday life. Jim skillfully leads multi-disciplinary design teams that provide innovative and culturally-centered solutions for its clients with a diverse portfolio of mixed-use communities, multi-family residential, retail, sports and entertainment projects nationally and abroad. Jim’s broad design background of Architecture, Placemaking, Planning and Environmental Graphics allows for a uniquely holistic design approach to his projects.
Jim has recently guided the creative efforts behind several notable award-winning projects in the Southeast: Kingsley Town Center in Fort Mill SC, Wildlight in Jacksonville FL, the Bowl at Ballantyne in Charlotte NC, the Design District in Charlotte/South End, and Westrow—the first phase of the River District community also planned in Charlotte NC. Prominent developer clients include Clear Springs Development, Asana Partners, Crescent Communities, Howard Hughes, Highwoods, Northwood Office & Retail, Royal Caribbean and Simon Property Group.
Prior to joining Cooper Carry, Jim led the Charlotte office as a Partner with 505Design for 18 years. He was also a Design Director for 11 years with Communication Arts in Boulder, CO. Jim graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees from the University of Arizona and Bachelor of Science in Design from Clemson University. He has volunteered as a Board member with the Foundation for Fort Mill Schools as well as an assistant volunteer coach with the First Tee of Greater Charlotte.
In his free time, Jim bike rides the best “rails-to-trails” around the country with his family as well as re-discovering his passion for landscape drawing through participating in plein-air painting artist competitions throughout the Southeast.
