Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, sequesters more carbon than any other forest globally. I am Chitali Biswas, my country Bangladesh is home to two thirds of Sundarbans. United Nations sea level rise projections show that by 2050, one third of my country will be underwater, destroying 50% of the Sundarbans and displacing 17% of total population. So what role can we play as landscape architects for the Sundarbans and my communities to sustain? We developed a climate resilience framework with integrated climate justice, exploring alternative pathways through scenario planning to restore, increase, and protect the Sundarbans ecosystem involving local communities by empowering them financially through climate investments and culturally through co-learning from local knowledge systems, advocating for nature-based solutions. These efforts aim to protect the Sundarbans while ensuring economic and social resilience for local communities of Bangladesh.
