In the context of one of the most transformational projects in the history of New York’s Central Park, community engagement around the planning effort to re-envision the pool and rink at the Harlem Meer is a compelling chapter in a story of reconnection of the community to the park’s essential purpose.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Examine the nature of change and continuity in a historic design landscape that is also used as a resource for active recreation.
  • Learn strategies for engaging diverse community perspectives in park projects.
  • Reflect on the ways in which broader community history and events can influence a community’s relationship to a public space.
  • Consider the nature and range of objectives and possible outcomes of community engagement on public space projects subject to the goals and constraints of working in a historic landscape.
