MON-C08: A Seat at the Table: Wielding Influence for Landscape Architecture

Civic involvement is a professional imperative. This session will provide participants with an overview of opportunities and real-world anecdotes about how landscape architects wield influence by occupying governmental positions, whether representing landscape architects’ interests on a local commission, in a state legislature, in Congress, or before the United States Supreme Court.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Be able to identify ways that landscape architects at all levels of the profession can contribute to ASLA’s policy objectives through serving in governmental roles.
  • Understand how landscape architects can promote the public’s health, safety, and welfare by serving in governmental roles.
  • Understand various effective and appropriate strategies to influence decision-makers at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Be able to articulate the most pressing threats and opportunities that demand ASLA’s attention and members’ engagement.
