Green infrastructure has captured the zeitgeist as a way for landscape architects to champion resilience. However, physical and conceptual barriers prevent people from connecting stormwater practices to the waters they protect. This session offers a direct experience with the Anacostia River and the experts dedicated to its restoration. See green infrastructure, restoration, and waterfront development projects along the Anacostia River firsthand by boat.

Includes: transportation, boat ride admission. Moderate walking.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the causes of non-point source pollution and its relationship with landscape design.
  • Learn the purpose and basic functions of green infrastructure and how innovation is driving adoption of green infrastructure.
  • Learn about D.C.’s legacy polluters and the primary barriers to recreational use (fishing and swimming) of the Anacostia River.
  • Learn about D.C.’s RiverSmart program and how community engagement has been used to meet water quality objectives.
